This is a completely unique west coast home a half hour by water off Tofino, BC, floating in the wilderness. This float house is 100% sustainable and the people who live here, Catherine and Wayne Adams, live off the land year round. They have built practically every part of their house with their own artistic and creative touch. Both Catherine and Wayne are artists and they refer to their float home and gardens as an on going evolving art project. You can go on a tour of their place when in Tofino, contact Mike White 1-250-726-8605 or 1-250-725-3435

Is it cheaper compared to a regular home? If so by how much?

I was recently informed of a new site by an architect who has greened his home. It is good because it shows the measures and the savings realized from each one. Link provided below.

I really want to find businesses which we can use in a rural community to help make a better world, one with low capital input and yet much potential to help others and make money. It can be an on-line business, but I also want to find cottage industries where we can make items which can help people live more sustainably.

Network marketing is acceptable, but I sure would like to find a company that is totally honest, doesn’t feel a need to exagerate their claims, and doesn’t focus so much on the fact that people are going to get rich so they can buy big unsustainable houses, and brand new cars. I would love a business where people who are involved believe in John Wesley’s saying: work as hard as you can, to make as much as you can, to use as little as you can, to give away as much as you can.

Also, this business would have much support, and people could easily learn about team building, learning organizations, and how to live life successfully on all levels. I’m not asking for a lot!

Kaiser Blair is a good and honest company. I think you would do well with it.

My husband and I are trying to find out approximently how much it would cost to build an eco friendly house, but I’m not having much luck. Does anyone know where I could find some good info?

This looks like a pretty good book, and the webpage lists others.

Talk to several custom home builders. You should be able to find one who has the experience you’re looking for.

As far as cost goes there’s a famous saying in modifying cars. "Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?" You can do some worthwhile things for very little money, and you’ll surely get your investment back. Super insulation, good windows, high efficiency gas furnace, using recycled materials, etc. Or you can really do a lot to reduce your "footprint" at more cost. Solar power for all your electricity, geothermal heating/cooling system, etc.
