Host Brad Pomerance interviews JPL’s Pete Jones and Dan Heinfeld, President of LPA –the firm which designed the building. JPL is a Federally-funded research and development facility managed by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Marcia Gibbons was our hostess and she taught us how to create a mud plaster on the interior and exterior of walls, amongst other things. The Passive House in the Woods (www.passivehouseinthewoods.com) is a 1,900 square foot two-story single family home with walk-out basement level, and a rooftop terrace. It was commissioned by a private client, designed by TE Studio, and constructed by Morr Construction. It sits on just over one acre in the Town of Hudson, WI – minutes from Interstate 94. Located on the outer edge of a residential development, the home overlooks the St. Croix River Valley. The building lot provides stunning views and prime passive solar exposure. The propertys north boundary is heavily wooded and borders undeveloped land. The design of the house works with the natural landscape, and minimizes impact on the wooded character of the lot. This house will be certified by the US Passive House Institute and MN GreenStar.

The EcoFabulous Home was designed by Kanau Uyeyama Architect Inc. As a firm, we have been researching eco-friendly solutions for many years. In 2008 we put all our knowledge to the test and designed and built the EcoFabulous Home (1000 sq.ft., 400sq.ft. deck) as the Feature Home for the British Columbia Home and Garden Show. There is a living wing (kitchen, dining, sitting) and a bedroom wing (2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms). Eco-friendly solutions included such things as 100% recycled paper with zero VOCs for kitchen and bathroom cabinets, cedar deck, siding and spa skirt, and other sustainable woods, CFLs and LEDs, Hydronic heating system with each radiator with its own non-electric thermostat 95% plus efficiency gas fired condensing boiler supplemented with solar panels, integrated home control system. www.prefabuloushomes.ca
