What does it take to have a green home remodeling? What are the basics of making and building sustainable homes? Susan Davis from Specitrum Fine Homes gives us some hints on how to have a sustainable home on the cheap and while saving money! It’s just a reminder that going green can actually save you money while creating a healthier life for you and your family. It’s simply amazing how it’s a win win situation!

Some of her ideas for a green home remodeling are:
- Have a home energy audit, you can even get it for free through your city or through your energy company. Worst case you pay someone to come by, and even then you’ll end up saving money by finding out what holes you need to patch or windows you might need to change.
- If you’re interested in having solar energy in your home, definitely make sure to have a home energy audit before installing it, you won’t believe how much money you could save just by closing up holes. Not only that, you’ll need a much smaller solar power and you’ll end up saving money there too!
- Read the labels, find out exactly what kind of furniture you’re putting inside your home, your carpet, paint, and even cleaning products can be very toxic and could be harming your health.

Green light for sustainable homes

A brownfield site in Inverness that has lain derelict for over 15 years will be transformed to provide 100 sustainable homes, backed by Scottish Government funding, Highland Housing Alliance has purchased the Glendoe Terrace site in Merkinch near the city centre – with £1 million finance from The Highland Council and £530,000 Vacant & Derelict Land funding provided by the Scottish Government.
The plans were unveiled by the First Minister as he joined Housing & Communities Minister Alex Neil and local councillors to see the finishing touches being made to Scotland’s Housing Expo – hosted by the Highland capital and expected to attract around 30,000 visitors from across the country.
