Whitney Sander came Center Stage with Mark Gordon to talk about the work he and his firm is doing to create greener buildings.
Sander Architects is the international award-winning firm whose approach to contemporary residential design has been making waves in the architecture world. Their Hybrid House uses components of prefab technology to create homes that are custom designed for each client. Homes that are not only green but also very high design. This is a time of extraordinary change for practitioners in the design fields and Sander Architects is a young exciting firm determined to be at the forefront of green architecture.
Sander Architects has been awarded the Dedalo Minosse International Award for Architecture in 2002 and 2004, along with Pritzker Prize winners Richard Meier and Hans Hollein. Numerous other national awards include AIA awards in 1996 and 2003, Architecture Magazine’s Home of the Year, and Architectural Record’s House of the Month. Publications include magazines such as Dwell, GA: Global Architecture, New York Times and the Los Angeles Times as well as the Los Angeles Times Magazine. Their work has been widely published in books such as Another 100 of the World’s Best Houses, noted architecture critic Michael Webb’s Brave New Houses, Adventures in Southern California Living, and various titles by author James Grayson Truelove. Recently the firm was a semi-finalist in the 2006 Living Steel Competition — which highlights the firm in their “Featured Architects” section (visit the site) — as well as semi-finalists in the 2006 Global Green Sustainable Housing Competition, sponsored by Brad Pitt, to design low-income housing for post-Katrina New Orleans.
Sander Architects seeks to find a balance between poetry and pragmatics. Starting with essential elements: environment, program, site restrictions, we encourage forms to develop which satisfy these basic needs while embracing the possibility of the poetic. In this way, a house for an Orthopedic Surgeon becomes a covert study in anatomy: metaphorical skin and bones. The elements that make up an aerobics studio, its interior architecture and furniture, take on physical tendencies: tension, compresion, torsion, sinew. The entry for a sculptor’s house is a ‘vessel’ whose propotions are based on a large-scale clay jar produced by the owner. These strategies are covert, not obvious, and allow the built environment to resonate thematically with the program and the people who use it. It is a strategy of innuendo, not declaration, a struggle with nuance, an attempt at quiet fertility. If the work celebrates what it means to inhabit, in grander terms, the work is a celebration of man’s rhythms and rituals.

As the pendulum has swung toward a globalized economy, more people are realizing the huge costs associated with the singular pursuit of maximizing profit, employing cheap labor, and ignoring environmental concerns. A shift is underway to promote sustainable local economies, in part, a necessary response to increased fuel costs, and global warming threats. Creating a local food economy means valuing the production of healthy foods, creating sustainable markets for farmers who produce the food, and livable wages for farm workers who toil in their fields. In part 1, Ken Meter, of Crossroads Resource Center, defines a strong food system, and why its so important.

Meet Digital Open (digitalopen.org) winning teen Ferran Rovira Bosca, of Spain. This 15-year-old created a concept for an “Eco Self-Sustaining House” — architecture of the future that captures its own renewable energy, and is independent of electrical power companies. Ferran believes that technology can help us come up with new ways of protecing the environment, and designing our homes in new, smarter ways is the area that captures his interest.

Passive Solar (4mins)
The Atchisons of Edmonton built a house that has used half the energy of a typical Edmonton house over the last 25 years. But there’s many more benefits to these ancient design principles than just saving money.
About Chapter 8: Staying Warm
The Energy and Utilities Board says our natural gas supplies are in decline. Heating fuel is not a luxury in Alberta so this issue hits close to home, literally. What are the new technologies that will keep us warm in future Alberta winters?
About Made-in-Alberta (MIA) Series
Energy, water and climate, these are hot topics for the 21st Century. With conventional fuel reserves running out, water tables running low, and global temperatures running high, 96 percent of Albertan’s now want new energy solutions. Since 2004, Barb Allard and her Made-in-Alberta team have been finding these solutions and bringing them to community television and the world wide web.

EnviroMission, Ltd. (www.enviromission.com.au; US Stock Market: EVOMY, Australian Stock Exchange: EVM) is a renewable energy developer of sustainable “green” energy solutions for the energy market. EnviroMission aims to be one of Australia’s leading producers of clean renewable energy. EnviroMission holds the proprietary rights to Solar Tower technology, a large-scale renewable energy technology based on simple fundamentals of physics — hot air rises. Solar Tower technology has the potential to offer competitive renewable energy with equal reliability to fossil fuel generators.
A single 200MW Solar Tower power station will provide enough electricity to power around 400,000 households. The energy output will represent an annual saving of more than 1,960,000 tonnes of greenhouse CO2 gases from entering the environment when compared to brown coal emissions in Victoria. The greenhouse savings equate to the removal of approximately 500,000 cars from the road. The Australian Solar Tower project consists of six distinct phases, the first two of which (project optimization and pre-feasibility commercialization) have already been completed. The third phase (final feasibility), paving the way for the implementation of the next three phases (final design, construction, and commercial operation).

Some words from the director of the film: Jacques ALLARD
for Architects for a better World
After careful and thorough research, we asked 13 world-acclaimed architects to participate in this film. 12 said yes, immediately.
We could feel that those architects were eagerly waiting to speak out for the first time on sustainable issues.
As we strongly believe it is important to let the images and the architects speak for themselves…..and let the general public make their own interpretation, this movie does not have a voice-over or an animator being 40% of the time on screen. This movie respects 100% the ideas and solutions expressed by the interviewed architects. Some architects came up with very sophisticated solutions while other architects used very simple solutions. Some architects with very large budgets, others with very limited budgets.
The movie has been made in 3 versions:
two versions for the general public, 73 minutes and 53 minutes
and a third version of 78 minutes with more technical specifications for students in architecture, architects and engineers.
As most viewers on the 12th of October’s preview in Hasselt are not students in architecture or building professionals, we have chosen to feature the film with less technical specifications.
This version of the film invites people to understand the meaning of sustainable architecture, showing many practical solutions that go beyond energy saving issues such as low energy and passive housing but city planning, education and human aspects are key issues as well.
With more than 38 hours of material and interviews, way too much for a film, we have decided to realize a book with the complete interviews of the architects and professors. This book will be published in the fourthcoming months.
It was a live experience and great honor meeting these 12 world class architects all willing to do their very best for a better world.
Jacques ALLARD
