Established in 2003, the Richard H. Driehaus Prize honors, promotes and encourages architectural excellence that applies the principles of traditional, classical and sustainable architecture and urbanism in contemporary society and environments. It is presented annually by the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture to an outstanding architect in recognition of their work. In conjunction with the Driehaus Prize, the annual Henry Hope Reed Award is given to recognize the contributions of supporters of classical architecture operating beyond the drafting tables and outside the practice of architecture.

Rural communities have often been impacted adversely in historic economic systems based on centralized power and food production. The loss of environmental and human wealth has been costly, particularly in Native American communities, but other rural communities are similarly impacted.

This historic pattern has buttressed an unsustainable way of life. The future must be sustainable in terms of environment, economics and social relations. Relocalizing food and energy systems as core elements of a rural economy indeed national and international economies has the potential to transform world social, economic and political relations.

Our work at a local, national and international level describes how communities make change and the implications for larger society.

Take a peek inside Ohio University’s Ecohouse, a model for sustainable living that serves as a student residence and a learning center.
Established in 2005, its mission is to demonstrate affordable, green technology and sustainable living by providing education and outreach for Ohio University, the local community and the Appalachian region.

The Ecohouse’s three residents host potluck suppers, open houses and workshops for community members to share information about the technology incorporated into the systems of the house and model a lifestyle that can help the planet.

This spring, Kate Hammond, an Ecohouse resident and Ohio University graduate student in environmental studies, gave the Outlook team a tour of the home.
